Once upon a time….

Once upon a time there was a lovely couple who gave birth to a cute lil’ baby girl and gave her a beautiful name "Fariha" which means "Joy and Happiness". However, the meaning they came to know about then was "Paak Daaman" (Could neone plz help tell me the english for Pak Daaman? :P ) and since it’s a very good meaning so, they decided to call the little one by this name.  Days passed…years passed, the baby girl grew up and started going to school. She had always heard her parents calling her "Fariha" pronounced as "Fur-ree-hA" but now she was quite surprised to hear everyone calling her by different names such as Faria (pronounced as fareeAa….very similar to "chariyaa"…an urdu slang word for crazy), Farha, Faryal, Farheen and hardly anyone called her by her real name. When she started her high school aka college, she was hopeful as she was part of a group of grown ups  now, who she mistakenly thought to  be intelligent enough to call her by her actual name that is FARIHA…but the situation was actually worst there. People not just called her by different defaced versions of “Fariha” but also spelled her name incorrectly. She spent all her college years in trying to correct them but all in vain :( . Then she started her undergrad studies and was hopeful that at least the people in her university would be wise enough to spell and pronounce her name properly but ahhh…there she came across some newer versions of her name, Freeha being the most common …..Haan…Freeha ?emoticonSounds like a name of some place where people could laugh freely ..Free Ha as in ha ha ha! Silly people emoticon  During the entire course of her bachelors….her coordinator kept calling her Fareha (pronounced as Faarayha) as if she was a ray coming from somewhere far…Far ray HA…HUH! She kept requesting everyone to call her Fariha but nobody listened.

Then after her bachelors, she started working and was pretty much sure of being called FARIHA as per rules of the professional environment, which require everyone at office to be called by his/her proper name but how wrong was she. At office also people kept calling her by the twisted versions of her name and even by different nicks, the most common being Fari/ Fari Pari (which till 2-3 years ago only the close friends were allowed to call her by)…sighemoticon. She excused everything but then one day she that noticed her boss has renamed her resume to “Fareeha_Athtaar”  OMG both the spellings incorrect! At that very moment she decided to SUE not just her boss but also everyone else who doesn’t call her by her actual name i.e. FARIHA and spell it correctly too i.e. F A R I H A (any other spelling and pronunciation no matter how appropriate it may seem to be is totally UNACCEPTABLE).

Being called by his/her name is everyone’s birth right and people have been depriving a little girl who btw is a young lady now emoticon, of her right for the past so many years. This can also be taken as the violation of human rights and hence needs to be strongly condemned. So, I PROTEST!

  5. Hmm, I always thought of you as Fur-ree-ha. That makes the most sense to me. Farha, Faryal, Farheen??? People must have very twisted minds.

And look at my name. I have it much worse. Native English speakers would pronounce it in all sorts of weird ways, depending on where they come from, none of them being correct.

  15. Ugh! I hate it when that happens. People keep calling me Ab-ser instead of AbsAr. You’d figure that correcting them three or four times would help… but NNOOOOO!

Yours is a pretty simple name, so it must piss you off even more :)
